In Edinburgh, time is not stored in one museum. It is under your feet on the Royal Mile, in the closes running off it, in the Georgian geometry of the New Town, in the university buildings around George Square and in the tram sliding west from the station. The city’s history is close enough to touch, but it is not separate from the life happening around it.
The Old Town rises towards Edinburgh Castle and runs down towards Holyroodhouse, the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Park. The New Town opens into Princes Street, George Street, Charlotte Square and the gardens between them. Waverley and Haymarket keep the centre connected; Calton Hill and Arthur’s Seat make the skyline feel like part of the address. During August, the same streets become a temporary city of performance, queues, venues and late trains.
Edinburgh’s knowledge economy has several homes. The University of Edinburgh stretches from Old Town and George Square to King’s Buildings and Holyrood. Edinburgh Napier adds Craiglockhart, Merchiston and Sighthill. Heriot-Watt sits further west at Riccarton. The hospitals, courts, Scottish Parliament, museums, libraries and national institutions give the city a civic weight that sits alongside restaurants, students, festivals and ordinary work.
Then the map turns towards the water. Leith and The Shore carry the port’s history into food, galleries, marine life and regeneration. Ocean Terminal and the Royal Yacht Britannia face the Forth. Portobello offers a beach and a local seaside rhythm. Stockbridge, Dean Village, Bruntsfield, Marchmont, Newington, Morningside, Corstorphine, Murrayfield and the neighbourhoods beyond the postcard all make Edinburgh more than its centre.
EdinburghHub.co.uk is for finding what is happening, where to go, which services are useful and how to move through a city where the old and the current are usually standing in the same frame.
What we cover
We cover:
- things to do, exhibitions, theatre, festivals and family days out;
- local events, Fringe, International Festival, Hogmanay, music and community activity;
- food, drink, shopping and independent businesses;
- practical local services and straightforward explainers;
- neighbourhood, coastal and city-centre guides;
- rail, tram, bus, walking and getting-around information;
- Edinburgh’s history, universities, culture, sport, coast and everyday life.
A page might be about a show in the Old Town, a walk from Waverley to Calton Hill, a match at Tynecastle Park, food on Leith Walk, a service near the Royal Infirmary, a tram to Newhaven or a quieter day in Portobello. The exact venue, campus, station, council and season matter more than a generic Edinburgh label.
Edinburgh, Scotland and the places around it
Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital and the City of Edinburgh Council area includes the central city, Leith, Portobello, Queensferry, suburban neighbourhoods and downs-edge communities. Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, Fife, the Scottish Borders, Glasgow and the wider Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region are connected to Edinburgh, but they are separate geographies.
The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University and Heriot-Watt University are distinct institutions. Edinburgh Airport is west of the centre; Waverley, Haymarket, Gateway and the tram network each serve different parts of the city. Festival pressure, Low Emission Zone rules, hills and weather can all change the practical answer to a simple journey.
Useful details, not just landmarks
Rail and tram services, festival access, road restrictions, hospital departments, museum programmes, opening hours, weather on Arthur’s Seat, beach conditions and event-day travel can change. We aim to keep practical details current and point readers back to the relevant organiser, operator, venue, council, hospital or transport provider when a final confirmation is needed.

A listing or link does not mean that City of Edinburgh Council, ScotRail, Scottish Government, Scottish Parliament, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, NHS Lothian, Heart of Midlothian FC, Hibernian FC, a venue or another named organisation endorses the site.
